NACIA Update -- Weekly Wrap Up
June 20, 2008
On Wednesday, the President vetoed H.R. 6124, the "Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008." H.R.. 6124, introduced and passed to address any potential issues surrounding the omission of the trade title in the previous Farm Bill legislation (H.R.. 2419), is virtually identical to the first Conference Report except for minor technical changes to avoid duplication. The President's veto message is posted below.
That afternoon, the House voted to override the veto by a roll call vote of 317 yeas to 109 nays. Shortly after, the Senate voted to override by a roll call vote of 80 yeas to 14 nays. Since both Chambers have voted to override the veto, the measure has become public law (P.L. 110-246).
We are now faced with Farm Bill implementation. As described in last week’s email, RMA is taking immediate action on some Farm Bill provisions, while others will be implemented at a later date. We will continue to play an active role in this process, ensuring that the voice of crop insurance agents is heard as implementation moves forward.
